Costa Ballena Golf Club

If you’re after a high quality round of golf with a few added luxuries, the Costa Ballena Golf Club is certain to impress. This relatively unknown golf resort is nestled between the coastal towns of Sanlucar and Puerto de Santa Maria and boasts three nine-hole courses as well as a clubhouse offering a gym, sauna and Jacuzzi, all of which are free to use after a game.

The first 18 holes were designed by Jose Maria Olazabal and opened in 1997. Each of the three par-72 courses features soft and springy turf, not unlike the kind found at Scottish or Irish links courses.

HANDY HINTS

Costa Ballena lies close to the sea and is therefore naturally quite flat, however, the Costa de la Luz is renowned for its strong winds, such as the Levante, a warm easterly wind which is present during the summer months and the Polente, a cooler westerly wind, present in winter. These can make the game something of a challenge but are a great test for more established golfers. Overhit your ball on the 16th and watch it disappear into the lake behind. Good luck!
