McDowell and Furyk Lead At 2012 U.S. Open

San Francisco – Jim Furyk won his U.S. Open in 2003 with a quirky swing. Graeme McDowell won his U.S. Open in 2010 with a more textbook version.

Their victories might be separated by seven years, but they will showcase both their differences and similarities on Sunday at The Olympic Club when they take a share of the 54-hole lead into the final round of the 2012 U.S. Open.

McDowell won two years ago at Pebble Beach Golf Links, only a couple of hours’ drive from here. He has shown his fondness for Northern California this week with his second sub-70 round, a 2-under 68 that caught Furyk, who rolled in a clutch birdie putt at the 17th hole to underscore a steady round of even-par 70 that left them tied at 1-under 209.

The new Captains of La Cala Resort’s golf club have begun their terms of office and are enjoying taking the reins at one of the busiest members’ clubs on the Costa del Sol.

There are many new members who have bought properties in the resort and they would like to encourage them to become active members of the club.

Many may feel that they aren’t good enough to join in, but every weekend there are fun competitions which are usually team events and they would all be more than welcome to come along and get to know the other members. Most of the members do not take the weekend competitions too seriously.

Rory McIlroy Wins Shot of the Year

Rory McIlroy’s sublime six iron to the tenth green during the final round of the US Open Championship has been voted by golf fans as The 2011 European Tour Shot of the Year.

The Northern Irishman, who won his first Major Championship on a glorious Sunday afternoon at Congressional Country Club, dominated The European Tour Shot of the Month competitions in 2011, winning three monthly awards (June, July and December) out of 12.

But it was that near-perfect, towering six iron from 216 yards on the par three tenth hole at Congressional which came to rest just a few inches from the hole that fans from My European Tour judged to be the outstanding shot of the 2011 season.

“I thought that shot was probably the most important in the round because YE Yang had just stuck it in there close, so to follow that shot up with mine was pretty cool” said McIlroy.

With 30 per cent of the vote, McIlroy was the overwhelming winner of the Shot of the Year, with Miguel Angel Jiménez acquiring 21 per cent of the vote to take second place for his fearless second shot into the infamous par five 17th at Valderrama in the Andalucía Masters in October, a 250-yard five wood that left the Spaniard with only a ten-foot putt for eagle.

Paul Lawrie wins Qatar Masters

Scotland’s Paul Lawrie shot a terrific final-day 65 to win the Qatar Masters and continue his fine start to 2012.

The 1999 Open winner finished four strokes clear of Australia’s Jason Day and Sweden’s Peter Hanson.

The Doha tournament was reduced to 54 holes after strong winds allowed only three hours of play on Friday.

Lawrie, who carded 69 and 67 in the first two rounds, also earned top 10 finishes in last month’s Volvo Golf Champions and Abu Dhabi Championship.

The 43-year-old had never previously secured three successive European Tour top 10 finishes in a season and his blistering run of form will lift him into the world top 50 for the first time in eight years when the rankings are next updated.

Donald seals US & European double

England’s Luke Donald became the first man to win the US and European money lists in one year after finishing third at the Dubai World Championship.

The world number one needed a top-nine finish to complete the feat and shot a bogey-free 66 for a 16 under total.

Rory McIlroy, who had to win the Dubai event for a chance of the money list, closed with a 71, 10 shots adrift.

Spaniard Alvaro Quiros, the overnight leader, won the title by two shots after a 67 left him at 19 under.

After accumulating £4.19m in winning the US money list, Donald finished with earnings of £3,632,685 from the European Tour.

He will complete his season at the Australian Masters starting on Thursday but in 26 tournaments so far this season the 34-year-old has missed only two cuts, one of which came at the Open Championship at Sandwich in July, with a remarkable 20 top-10 finishes.

He won four tournaments, including the World Golf Championship Match Play event and the European Tour’s flagship event, the PGA Championship at Wentworth, which also saw him crowned world number one.

Appleby Australian Open defence in doubt

Defending champion Stuart Appleby may be forced to pull out of this week’s Australian Masters in Melbourne.

Chronic pain in his lower back is troubling the nine-time PGA Tour scored a one-shot victory 12 months ago.

“I haven’t done many withdrawals prior to first rounds,” said the 40-year-old, whose rivals this week include world number one Luke Donald.

“I don’t know my body well enough to know whether I can manufacture something from an ad hoc swing or whether it’s a futile fight that I need to try another day.

“I’ll make that decision closer to the time.”

Appleby also revealed that he wasn’t 100% when he won at Victoria GC last year although he didn’t have to contend with constant pain.

“I could actually still play and still turn my body around but this year it’s been touchy,” he said.

Hutsby leading by one at Q-school

Sam Hutsby remains in the lead at the halfway stage of the European Tour qualifying school, although he is now just one clear of the pack.

Hutsby carded a 68 in Girona to move to 15 under par to stay at the top of the leader board, with former Walker Cup team-mate Andy Sullivan closing him down with a 67.

His only dropped shot came at the 13th – his fourth – however, he got it back at the 18th but a solid closing nine maintained the momentum.

He is still on course to complete a second successful visit to the Qualifying School, having finished runner-up behind his compatriot Simon Khan in 2009.
